Sultanahmet's History Reaching to the Sky: Obelisk

Sultanahmet Square is one of the most important historical and touristic spots in Istanbul. In addition to many iconic buildings such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque Ziyaret et and Topkapı Palace, the square also features an obelisk reaching for the sky. This obelisk is not only a majestic monument, but also a testimony to the mysterious history of ancient Egypt and the might of the Roman Empire.

The Historical Journey of the Obelisk

Built by Pharaoh Thutmosis III in the 15th century BC, the obelisk was erected at the entrance to the Temple of Amon in Karnak. This monument, weighing about 200 tons, is 25 meters high, and on it, written in hieroglyphs, the pharaoh's achievements and his devotion to the god Amon-Ra are described.

The obelisk was moved to Alexandria by the Roman Emperor Augustus in 30 BC, brought to Istanbul by Theodosius I in 390 BC and erected in the center of the Hippodrome. This was done to symbolize the power and glory of the Roman Empire.

The Mysterious Hieroglyphs of the Obelisk

There are inscriptions written in hieroglyphs on all four sides of the obelisk. These inscriptions are still being researched and deciphered today. The inscriptions describe Thutmosis III's memories of his pharaohship, his offerings to the god Amon-Ra and his victories in wars.

Location of the obelisk in Sultanahmet Square

In the 16th century, with the destruction of the Hippodrome, the obelisk took its present place. Located on the west side of Sultanahmet Square, the obelisk is an important symbol that attracts tourists.
